Abstract

A problem of increasing importance in the use and maintenance of drain asphalt is the loss of material from the surface, known as raveling. In this paper attention is paid to raveling from a mechanistic point of view. A continuum damage model is proposed and applied to the repeated load uniaxial tensile test. This test is supposed to give information on the raveling behaviour of drain asphalt. It has not yet been possible to quantify the principal parameters from the model. In order to achieve this, one more relation must be found or one more aspect must be determined experimentally. Instead, two derived parameters i.e., the strain rate and the time at failure are determined. With these parameters it is possible determined. With these parameters it is possible to discern types of asphalt with different bitumen modifications and different ages. Though it is as yet not possible to rank these different types to raveling sensitivity, the obtained qualitative insight may lead to improvements of the experimental program. (A)
