Abstract

RDS (radio data service)-TMC (traffic management control) service is already available in the SERTI Spanish area (triangle Madrid-Valencia-Barcelona and connection to France). RDS-TMC is basically an on-trip service, but pre-trip applications could be also interesting. The service is provided by Direccion General de Trafico (DGT), the Spanish Traffic Road Administration. DGT's Traffic Management Center in Madrid is connected through a dedicated channel to the Spanish National Broadcaster (Radio Nacional de Espana- RNE). Besides the normal use of RDS-TMC as an on-trip information media, data can also be used as a pre-trip information source using a PC. Using a software application this data can be treated and incorporated to a GIS (Geographical Information System) application or some cartography. In this way RDS-TMC messages can be received in a very friendly way in a PC at office or home as a pre-trip service. This draft paper describes a pre-trip application based on PC to be used mainly by emergency services. This has been done in the framework of ARTS project and has been co-funded by DG-Transports.
