In 1964 the National Safety Council's Defensive Driving Course was the first driver improvement program in the USA. The aim of this course is to educate drivers in ways of collision prevention. In teaching these techniques the Defensive Driving Course also seeks to promote an attitude of mutual understanding, courtesy and cooperation on the road. It is estimated that more than 27 million drivers have been through the programme in the USA and Canada. In the spring of 1990, a new innovative program Attitudinal Dynamics of Driving was introduced. This is an 8 hour program designed for the habitual traffic offender caught driving while impaired or under the influence of alcohol. The french title of this paper is `Ré-éducation pour les conducteurs dangereux ou singuliers : "conduite préventive" dans les cours d'amélioration des conducteurs'. The german title is `Nachschulung gefährlicher oder auffälliger Fahrer : "Vorbeugendes Fahren" in Kursen zur Verbessersung des Fahrverhaltens'.
