Abstract
The rapid growth of cities in Africa presents urban governments and urban transport planners and engineers with enormous challenges. How can adequate mobility be achieved for the entire population in a manner that is financially feasible for the government, affordable for the inhabitants from their available household budget, and acceptable with respect to the level of traffic accidents and environmental degradation that the traffic produces? And how can the provision of transport infrastructure create maximum value for money in stimulating the urban economy? This paper explores the potential of a type of urban transport infrastructure that has been almost completely neglected in African cities: walkways.
