This poster paper introduces concerns about the re-use of undeployed airbags from end-of-life vehicles. The author proposes that the motor vehicle industry should liaise more closely with national competent authorities about regulations on use of unpackaged airbags and that vehicle users should be better informed of the dangers of re-used airbags. There appear to be no regulations to prevent unused airbags being fitted into other vehicles or to prevent covers being fitted without an airbag underneath. The author feels that only trained and licensed operators should handle airbags and that each inflator should be identifiable by microchip technology. For the covering abstract see ITRD E126782.
