Abstract

This paper provides an exploratory analysis of the deeper reasons for mobility, and how understanding them can help in policies to reduce both the "need" to travel and car dependence. It concludes that: (a) "journey" often comes before "purpose"; (b) the "need" to travel is real but could be partly met without any movement; and (c) while some current policies satisfy our natural pattern of motives and will therefore succeed, the limit may come sooner than we would like if the multi dimensional approach is not considered.
