Abstract

The Road Traffic Advisor project is now heading towards its conclusion. Over 80 5.8GHz radio beacons have been installed on 130 km of motorway. These beacons are the final link in a two-way communication chain between vehicles and Traffic Control Centres in England and Wales. This paper describes the development of the RTA project during its first two years, its plan for evaluation in the final year and initial ideas for follow-on projects. The project has developed an open media-independent architecture and a set of protocols and messages which provide location and direction specific information relevant to the road being driven by the user. It can collect information from vehicles for both road management and driver information purposes. (A*)
