Abstract

In an attempt to address several consumer-related issues surrounding automobile safety, this article observes the competing interests of groups which have been involved in regulating, defining, and providing automobile safety. Specifically, the article discusses automotive safety, including an analysis of its regulation; the roles played by both the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in measuring automotive safety; the general public's view of automotive safety and the subsequent response by automakers; and several problems regarding current safety measurements.
