Abstract

In recent years, there has been an increasing need for services that allow one to determine one's location in the city or countryside and to search/access various kinds of information relevant to that location, such as town guides, up-to-date event information, transport information, etc. There are also heightening customer needs for logistic management systems which track the location of trailers, vans and other business-use vehicles from the office. Such location information can be determined/expressed in terms of extremely limited data such as latitude and longitude, allowing it to be efficiently transmitted and received using a packet communication system. NTT DoCoMo is responding to such needs by providing the "DoPa" wireless packet communication service. This report gives an introduction regarding various services using location information, as well as the "DoPa" wireless packet communication system, which allows transmission of low-volume data such as location information, and some use cases of location information services combined with mobile telecommunications.
