Abstract

An analysis of vehicle flow in the Rebouças tunnel (2700 metres long; two galleries) based on traffic flow theory is described. Flow and average travelling speed, and density and average travelling speed ratios are examined for a period when the tunnel operated with two 3.6 metre wide traffic lanes per gallery in the same direction with 2.7 metre wide shoulders. The results are compared to those obtained after the tunnel started operating with three 3.3 metre wide lanes without shoulders.
