Abstract

In the Federal Republic of Germany, graduated instruments for the implementation of traffic calming in municipalities are provided for under the German Highway Code. The development of recent years, including the 30 km/h speed zones and other economical solutions, helped propagate the idea of area-wide traffic calming. Urban development and environmental concerns are becoming increasingly important, in addition to the road safety issue. Public transportation and bicycle traffic are being supported to a greater extent than in the years before and the instruments to remodel major and minor roads have substantially been enriched and diversified.
