Recommendations for the consideration of two-wheel motor vehicles : developing and managing infrastructure. From a road safety point of view, two-wheel motor vehicle users represent a significant challenge. There has been an increase, over the last few years, in the number of two-wheel motor users falling victim to traffic accidents with injury. One of the ways to promote their safety is to better understand their specificities and take these into consideration when developing and managing infrastructure. The first part of this guide presents factual elements about two-wheel motor vehicles: types of vehicle, their specific nature and safety challenges. Further general concepts are also detailed: the legal responsibility of infrastructure developers, quality approaches for taking better consideration of this category of road user and the different policies implemented. The second, more practical, part describes how to account for the specific nature of two-wheeled motor vehicle users for several types of infrastructure. These “close-ups” on infrastructure development and two-wheel motor vehicles also give a reminder of norms, regulations and other best practices, without wishing to replace existing reference material. This guide is based on the expertise of national and local network specialists in France, as well as research work recently undertaken and the experience of some users.
