Recommendations for surface colours for visual signalling.

Abstract

This report presents recommendations concerning non-luminous surface colours in terms of chromaticity limits and luminance factor limits. These limits were selected by compromise between a reliable recognition of colour, the established practice giving full satisfaction and the limits being imposed by manufacturing technologies and colour measurement tolerances. The limits are recommended for international adoption. Narrower limits can be adopted by national authorities so as to conform with national usage or by international authorities so as to be adaptable to the requirements of particular systems. The recommendations apply to unlighted traffic signs for visual signalization to all modes of transport and for warning signs and all colour codes in general.
