Abstract

Work Package 6 (WP6) of the integrated EU research project DRUID (Driving under the Influence of Drugs, Alcohol and Medicines) focuses on driving licence related measures, summarized under the term “withdrawal”, for drivers under the influence of alcohol (DUI), drugs (DUID) and psychoactive medicines. This WP aims at increasing and actualizing knowledge on withdrawal practices in the European countries, assessing the different withdrawal strategies and developing recommendations with a comprehensive view on the entire problem. In Task 6.1 (State-of-the-Art on Withdrawal of Driving Licence), a comprehensive questionnaire survey in European countries was carried out, focussing on legal consequences in case of psychoactive substance impaired driving. That survey gives a general overview on measures being imposed on drink-drivers, drug-drivers or impaired drivers due to consumption of medicines. The results are summarized in Deliverable 6.1. The investigations in Task 6.2 supplement and complete the information on withdrawal obtained in Task 6.1. Besides the collection of further data regarding withdrawal practices in the European countries, empirical primary results on driving licence related measures are added. Additionally, expert knowledge is included. On the basis of these scientific and practical sources, final conclusions and recommendations are developed.
