Abstract

Red light running is a major cause of road accidents. Red light cameras are used to reduce the number of accidents at signal-controlled intersections with a history of red light violations. Austrian company, Redflex Traffic Systems, provides digital red light and speed camera enforcement systems. Results obtained by installing red light cameras in the Toledo, San Jose, and Freemont in the USA are outlined. Redflex systems include the digital SMARTCam camera technology and SMARTScene, which provides real-time imaging of the events that took place within the intersection before, during and after an incident. The use of fixed-speed cameras in the Sydney Harbour Tunnel in Australia is described. Redflex has also developed a mobile digital speed van for mobile speed enforcement.
