Abstract

Certain characteristics of the cross-wind response of tractor-trailer combinations were obtained on the basis of a simplified model. Tractor-trailer vehicles apparently possess an inherent stability as opposed to single automotive vehicles which are almost invariably unstable in a cross-wind. Gust response can be reduced by reducing the trailer aerodynamic yawing moments or by using a spring between the tractor and the trailer.
