Abstract

The Paris-Rhine-Rhone Motorway Company (SAPRR) which operates a network of more than 1200 km of toll motorways has set up specific equipment designed: to know sooner about events which may disrupt traffic flow; to inform network operators as well as other involved parties and motorway users; to act in the best possible way to eradicate the cause of the disturbance or reduce its effects. The "REGA SYSTEM" constitutes the technical framework providing information and decision-making assistance for various Traffic Control Centers in order to improve management of traffic flow conditions. Today, almost 800 km of rural motorways are concerned, which are equipped with traffic analysis devices and Variable Message Variable Message Boards. The description of the system, from the reasons behind its launch, to its most recent developments, at the same time presenting its principal functions, might interest operators and designers. (A)
