Abstract

The objective of this document is to provide guidance on the development, use, and maintenance of a regional Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) architecture. This document is a guide for transportation professionals involved in the development, use, or maintenance of regional ITS architecture, and an important tool for use in transportation planning and project implementation. The guide presents a six-step process for creating a regional ITS architecture with supporting examples of each architecture product, and an approach for mainstreaming ITS into the planning and project development process. Within this guidance document, section 2 provides an overview of the process, and sections 3 through 6 describe the regional ITS architecture development process in detail. The two appendices in this report provide additional background information.
