Abstract

This proceedings provided the basis for a discussion on road freight transport during the ECMT Council of Ministers meeting in Lisbon on 29-30 May 2001. All the documents presented at the proceedings are included along with a summary document. The intention of regulatory reform is to increase transport efficiency while ensuring that security, respect for the environment and harmonious social development are protected. Issues considered include the enlargement of the European Union, the integration of environmental considerations and the level of taxation. Key policy issues include reduced economic regulation, reduced freight tariffs, agreements on international traffic, personnel training, work regulations, law enforcement, traffic control, and the structure of the industry.
