Abstract

It is possible to calculate the actual travel time based on measurement data of the current traffic flow. The algorithm used for this purpose is described in outline in this paper. Since November 1996, the estimated travel time on the Dutch A13 motorway, The Hague in the direction of Rotterdam, is displayed on the Dynamic Route Information Panel (DRIP) located in Delft. The DRIP shows the travel time on the section of the road between Delft North and the Rotterdam ring road. After being commissioned, the DRIP was evaluated extensively. The most important conclusions of the evaluation were: (1) the algorithm functions (reasonably) well; (2) road users are reasonably satisfied; and (3) the DRIP system functions properly after a few starting-up problems. The effects of the information provided on slip road traffic were not observed. (A) See also IRRD 491589 (C 11074) and 491590 (C 11075).
