Abstract

Based on Dutch data the authors conclude that very high traffic intensities on motorways with service level E or F are accompanied by a much greater number of hours before and after, during which intensities are lower but accident frequencies are higher. Therefore the weighed averages over the whole day will be higher than those which can be calculated for motorways with a higher level of service.
