Abstract

Perhaps more than elsewhere amongst the countries endowed with a well-developed public transport network, the way in which the various modes of transport are linked with one another is very important in france. As regards the heavily built-up areas, the density of the urban networks contrasts with the poorness of the non-radial suburban services. However, concern about the interrelation between the modes is of relatively recent origin for which there are many reasons. A study was made at ten locations into the use of public and private transport. Each area studied is characterised. The primary objective of the study was to identify the influence of the link-up capacity of the transport network on users' choice of mode. The practices and opinions regarding travel to and from work and the nature of the choice of public transport available for making the journey from the point of view of forming a chain, are discussed.
