Abstract

Surveys were conducted wherebye vehicle speeds in an unconstrained rural environment were related to driver and vehicle characteristics, obtained by stopping vehicles and conducting brief roadside interviews. It was found that observed speed was significantly affected by vehicle type, year of manufacture, engine capacity, vehicle ownership, intended trip distance, driver age, trip purpose, annual driver income and driver sex.
