Abstract

In a simulated car meeting situation with the opposing cars 100 meters apart, the glare intensity is varied and the corresponding detection luminance threshold is established. The threshold used is an absolute (no light on the background) rather than a contrast threshold. A field experiment analogous to the laboratory experiment is carried out with approximately the same glare levels. The results from the two experiments are compared. the field experiment gives higher levels of threshold luminance and some explanations for this difference are given. In the field experiment the polarized light is also studied.
