The relationship between vehicle roof strength and occupant injury in rollover crash data.

Abstract

This study examined 60,758 single vehicle rollover accidents from four state motor vehicle accident files. Logistic regression and correlation analyses were performed to examine the relationship between (1) roof strength versus severe rollover injury rates, (2) roof damage versus roof strength, (3) aspect ratio versus severe rollover injury rates, and (4) aspect ratio versus roof damage for vehicles involved in rollover accidents. The correlation analysis was performed after controlling for belt use, accident severity and driver demographics to measure the true effect of roof strength on injury reduction. Some of the findings show that there is no relationship between roof strength and the likelihood of severe and the likelihood of severe occupant injury or ejection in rollover accidents, and there is no relationship between the likelihood of severe roof damage and roof strength in rollover accidents.
