Abstract

Reliable traffic information from door to door for road transport. Today different media are delivering actual traffic information. The developments in the field of data communication will make it possible to integrate traffic information systems with for example freight transport information systems for road transport in the near future. The emphasize is on actual information regarding main roads for example. The technology is offering possibilities to also supply information regarding travel times for the secondary roads. For the freight transport sector for road transport improving planning, reducing costs and improving customer service are the main incentives to use traffic information. With the increasing unreliability of travel times on secondary roads and the further decreasing costs of (traffic) information systems business and authorities will to a larger extent be willing to invest in reliable travel information. Recently the Ministry of Transport announced that reliable travel information is one of the main issues in traffic and transport policy for the coming years. Reliable travel times are next to safety and environment one of the elements, which will play an important role to reach a quality network for freight transport. In the paper mobility a key part is reserved for innovations in the field of traffic management and travel information. (Author/publisher)
