Abstract

The effects of traffic calming on vehicle emissions have been investigated in only a small number of studies, and the results have been variable. There is a need to measure emissions in the laboratory to provide more reliable information on the impacts of traffic calming, and to validate the emission models currently used in such applications. However, there is also a need to determine the extent to which measured and calculated impacts are reflected in the emission behaviour of the vehicle fleet on the road. This paper describes a study, designed to address this latter issue, in which the effects of two different traffic calming measures on fleet emissions were investigated using a remote sensing system.
