Abstract

This international study identifies different types of damage and defects and reviews effective inspection and repair methods of bridge substructures including various types of abutments, piers and foundations. It is based on information gathered from OECD Member countries. Chapter I describes the background, scope and tasks of this study. In Chapter II the defects that have been encountered in bridge substructures are described. Chapter III focuses on inspection methods to assess the damage inflicted on substructures. Chapter IV consists of a review of current repair techniques for bridge substructures as well as improved repair techniques. Chapter V deals with the problems and aspects to be taken into account in planning and implementing a repair policy. Apart from identifying the main areas for research, Chapter VI also sets forth the main R&D orientations for future bridge substructure repair. Chapter VII summarises the report's findings and give five recommendations to find better ways to inspect and repair bridge substructures. Actions on substructures are difficult to accomplish and require application of sound engineering practices and a wide range of innovative techniques. The Report provides bridge managers and engineers with a substantial review of maintenance expertise for bridge substructures and comprehensive directions of future research activities.
