Abstract

We considered that our first task should be to determine how and whether AHB should be simplified to make them cheaper to install and maintain without affecting their present excellent safety record. We have made a number of recommendations which we believe should satisfy both these aims. Second, we considered whether a form of automatic open crossing of the type used in Europe could safely be introduced on minor roads crossing the railway. Third, we considered other forms of automatic crossings and where they might be used.
