Abstract

This report describes the results of a study of road accidents in residential areas undertaken by the Institution of Highway Engineers under contract with the Department of the Environment from October 1971 to September 1975. The object was to contribute towards the solution of the problem of the safe design of residential areas, and in particular to attempt to assess: (1) the general nature and frequency of accidents associated with residential access traffic; (2) the overall extent to which the frequency of such accidents appears to be affected by the design of the road and footpath system and (3) the extent to which individual design features, such as the width of a street, appear to affect the frequency of the accidents.
