Abstract

About 16 million persons and 10.7 million vehicles were involved in 6.4 million accidents reported to police in 1981 -- more than 17, 000 accidents each day of the year.This continuing epidemic killed 49, 268 people and injured 3.5 million; 423, 000 were hospitalized a total of about 4.2 million days and lost 63, 000 person-years of work.
