Abstract

The study of traffic patterns is very helpful in order to understand the process of traffic congestion on freeways. A short overview and a case study of traffic patterns on a Belgium highway is presented here. The accurate modelling of traffic with the help of micro-simulation packages has become very popular. The use of traffic patterns in the calibration of these models makes the modelling more accurate. Two commercial packages have been tested on the case study. The modelling can help us to better understand and calculate the effects of several ITS measurements. For the covering abstract see ITRD E114174.
