Abstract

Advanced Cruise-assist System (AHS) in Japan aims to improve traffic safety, traffic efficiency, road traffic environment and the convenience and comfort of drivers by a coordinated combination of 'smart-cars' (i.e. cars having intelligence), 'smart-way' (i.e. highways having intelligence) and 'smart-gateway' (i.e. intelligent road-vehicle communication). Research and development is currently being conducted to realize in the near future the system that can improve traffic safety. This paper contains requirements of the system that are necessary conditions to develop and operate the system. The ideas behind the requirements are discussed and the methods for setting the requirements for an obstacle collision prevention service of the system introduced. (A*)
