Abstract

The situation in the conurbations worldwide is characterised by constant traffic jams and thus by the unbearable impacts of air pollution and traffic noise. Increasing mobility will even worsen the situation. So far several separately operated systems have been in use to regiment the traffic and to inform the traffic-participants in urban areas and their surrounding regions, but no real overall solution has been found. Taking into consideration all the modes of traffic and coordinating and integrating planning, design, construction, operation and the financing of traffic installations is an inevitable step towards such a solution. Centre of attention is the intermodal operation in the field of road and rail bound transportation in urban areas, with its technical and organisational requirements. (A)
