Abstract
Signing on urban and rural roadways exhibits a complex of sign positions and ambient illumination levels suggesting need for determining optimum characteristics for retro-reflec tive materials under these condition. Other studies have eval luated available reflective materials for individual effecti~ veness.This study is designed to establish reflective charc~ teristics required for any installation and suggests a bright ness range for typical sign environments.
