The results of a study into factors influencing private car use and other related transport variables in the Netherlands are presented. Data from the Netherlands travel survey concerning the period 1978- 1982 were used as well as the series with respect to transport expenditure spanning a longer period. The data for the period 1978- 1982 are especially relevant because during this period a curve deflection in the behaviour of car drivers was observed. The results of the analysis indicate that. Among other things: (A) Fuel prices made little influence on travel patterns; (B) the growing reduction in fuel consumption of the car population is mainly due to manufacturers introducing more fuel efficient vehicles; and (C)personal net income is the most important variable influencing car use.
