Abstract

The paper, which is concerned with a variety of questions in research management, is based on experience in undertaking research on roads and road based transport in the public sector. It opens by considering the general nature of research in this field and identifies the range of users of that research. There then follows a review of the reasons for undertaking investigations of this type and the nature of the benefits to be obtained.
