RESEARCH OF PROBE DATA COLLECTION USING INFRARED BEACONS.

Abstract

Recently, researches into the collection and utilization of data of vehicles traveled path (probe car) are under way at a variety of places. However, due to high data transmission costs, actual use of probe cars has not been progressing as expected. On the other hand, in Japan infrared beacons installed on roads by traffic administrators now number 47,766 nationwide (at March 31, 2006), playing a constant role as vehicle/roadside communication. In May, 2004, UTMS-Japan (Universal Traffic Management Society of Japan) began a research into the use of infrared beacons to collect probe information at low costs with collaboration between private and public sectors, and made feasibility experiments in 2004 and 2005. This paper introduces feasibility experiments in 2005, especially the experiment to produce improved VICS information. For the covering abstract see ITRD E134653.
