Abstract

The principal results of the study made on connection with the general speed limit in force in 3 counties of southern Finland for 4 months in 1962 are as follows: The awareness of the speed limits was very good. The speed limit was generally well obeyed. Road traffic accidents in the whole restriction area including local speed limit area were reduced by 6.1 percent. The reduction in the number of accidents was clearly larger on main roads outside local speed limit area. Average speeds were not essentially affected by the speed limit, but the top speeds and the deviation of vehicle speeds decreased. No increase in speeds occurred on bad roads.
