Abstract

The reseaches into accident statistics described in the first part of this paper, and due mainly to members of the staff of the Road Research Laboratory, are used in an attempt to answer the following questions: (1) by how much does darkness increase the night accident rates and there fore by how much might street lighting conceivably reduce them ? (2) What effect does street lighting of an up-to-date standard actually have on the night accident rates ? The second section of the paper describes the work being done at the laboratory on the reflection of light from road surfaces. It does not give the detailed measurements of reflection for individual surfaces but describes some of the general conclusions.
