Abstract

The purpose of the bulletin is to summarise the findings from recent surveys and studies and to make layout recommendations for use by designers and those who prepare local highway standards and development briefs for new housing schemes. Part 1 briefly summarises the evidence and makes recommendations for planning the access road and footpath network as a whole. It recommends an access road hierarchy based on expected peak vehicle flows and the configuration of the network. Part 2 suggests revised geometric standards for some detailed aspects of network design such as road widths, alignment and the layout of junctions.
