Abstract

Four observational studies for various segments of the traffic population were continued in 19 cities throughout the nation. Data obtained through daytime observations at approximately 30 traffic intersections and 3 major shopping centers in each city were used to: (1) determine the extent to which drivers and front- out board passengers of automobiles used safety belts and incorrectly used (misused) shoulder belts; (2) determine the use of safety belts and child safety seats by passengers of automobiles; (3) determine correctness of safety seat installation; and (4) determine the extent to which helmets are used by operators and passengers of motorcycles and mopeds.
