Abstract

The aim of this study was to monitor seat belt wearing and child restraint usage, by occupants of vehicles, in metropolitan Perth. It was intended to high-light areas and target groups which may require further attention with regards to increased restrained usage. The survey was conducted from 1st to 11th October 1991, a period corresponding to the school holidays, so that a larger number of children could be observed in this study. Primary locations for observations were entrances to large shopping centre car parks in various areas throughout metropolitan Perth. Data that was collected on restraint wearing rates was categorised into drivers, adult passengers and child passengers 14 years of age and under.
