Abstract

Recent government policy in South Africa favours a renewed role for public transport in urban areas. Trends in the current provision of services show that an approach which fundamentally restructures the network of public transport services, and which includes supporting land use change, car restraint and a re-evaluation of current planning and management approaches, could provide the necessary mechanism for enhancing public transport patronage and overall urban 'sustainability'. (A) The French title of this paper is: "La réstructuration du réseau et l'exploitation des transports en commun dans les villes sud-africaines d'après-apartheid".
