Abstract

The traffic protected zone programme was conducted in six pilot communities to improve traffic safety, environmental conditions, and the quality of urban life. In two medium- sized cities, two contrasting solutions were adopted to reduce traffic through the city centre and adjacent areas; some of the results are presented. The pilot studies illustrate the special problems involved in reducing traffic in rural areas.
