This article describes the refurbishment taking place on the East-West metro underground railway in Budapest, Hungary. Waterproofing of underground structures to prevent water infiltration included track reconstruction, insulation of tunnel entry and construction of a deep drainage system. Eight deep stations and one tunnel station are being reconstructed, to increase attractiveness and safety and reduce noise nuisance. Ventilation, air conditioning, lighting, communication and passenger information systems will be upgraded. Reconstruction of railway tracks will involve renewal of three different track systems. A combined system of fire safety equipment is being installed. Moving stairs and elevators are being replaced and newly introduced. The power supply system, train control and safety systems are being upgraded to current standards, and new rolling stock will be purchased. (Author/publisher).
