Abstract

Within Great Britain the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) places a legal responsibility on a driver to notify them of any medical condition that may affect his or her ability to drive. Little is known about the actual level of DVLA notification. Little is also currently known about the process of returning to driving taken by drivers after an injury or illness, or whether there is a difference in the mobility outcomes of those who do notify the DVLA of their condition compared to those who do not. This report presents the results of a research project commissioned by the Department for Transport's Mobility and Inclusion Unit and conducted by a project team from TRL Limited and The University of Warwick's Head Injury Group. The project investigated drivers' experiences following both a traumatic head injury and a limb amputation. (Author/publisher)
