Abstract

This paper was presented at the `Geometric design : in defense of transportation improvements' session. Alberta Transportation and Utilities is currently in the process of developing an advanced Intranet database and a suite of application tools called the Infrastructure Management System (IMS), that would increase the effective management of Alberta's primary highway infrastructure. Initial releases of IMS include detailed information on the state of roads, bridges, appurtenances, traffic, planning, and other appropriate data. A decision was made to increase the efficiency of development work by evaluating the possibility of incorporating commercially available software into the existing system. This paper details findings from seven safety analysis software packages that were assessed in accordance to the location-specific safety analysis of IMS. It was concluded that non were suitable for integration with the existing IMS database and applications. The evaluation, however, provides an indication of potential safety analysis software features and functions for future customized software applications. (A)
