Abstract

The paper reviews the development of the first Australian standard for child restraining devices in passenger cars, and the success of the standard in ensuring that satisfactory restraints were available on the market for children of different age groups. A major revision in 1975 broadened the range of devices available for approval and introduced dynamic tests for forward, sideways and rearward impacts.
