In 2000, the government published a safety strategy in Tomorrow's Roads Safer for Everyone (see ITRD E104542). By 2010, the aim is to achieve compared with the average for 1994-98: (1) a 40% reduction in the number of people killed or seriously injured (KSI) in road accidents; (2) a 50% reduction in the number of children (defined as 0-15 years old) killed or seriously injured; and (3) a 10% reduction in the slight casualty rate, expressed as the number of people slightly injured per 100 million vehicle kilometres. This article shows progress towards the Government's casualty reduction targets for Great Britain for 2010 and reviews the main trends in road casualties in 2000 compared with recent years.
